General information
Publication date and place: 1539 by Antonio Gardano in Venice.
Composer: Mostly Jacques Arcadelt. Two pieces by both Francesco de Layolle and Francesco Corteccia also included.
Description: This "true" second book of madrigals was printed by the publisher Gardano only one month after the original 2nd book of madrigals, printed by Scotto, was published. Gardano felt that the earlier publisher had falsely attributed many madrigals to Arcadelt that weren't originally his. Oddly enough, even after his complaints, Gardano ended up misattributing at least four pieces in what was supposedly a purely Arcadelt song-book. The contents were slightly revised in 1541 and that edition was reprinted in 1543, 1552, and 1560.
