"Some time ago. an international competition for compositions for the cello was announced. I submitted my sonata for violoncello and piano Opus 17, and my pieces for cello Opus 24. taking as my motto for them the words of Goethe. 'Wenn Ihrs nicht fuhlt, Ihr werdets nicht erjagen'. this you must feel, for chasing it will not help you. I was awarded a prize for the last-named while the sonata was recom-mended to a publisher by the judges Niels W. Gade, Carl Reinecke and Bernath as an 'addition to literature worthy of publication' and published.
