This unusual and rather impressive elegy is found in a single source, the Album of Margaret of Austria. MS 228 of the Bibliotheque royale. Koninklijke Bibliotheek in Brussels. No composer is given in the source, which fails to give attributions for all but one of the pieces, even though most have been identified from other sources. the most generously represented composer is Pierre de la Rue, followed by Josquin des Pres, who is the only composer to be credited in the collection. If one had to pick a composer for the present piece, Josquin would be a good candidate, as the work has that master's quality of economy. there are just enough melismas in the superius and tenor parts to keep the work flowing, but absolutely no more than necessary, and the simple cantus firmus parts and two very economical parts at the bottom of the texture waste nothing. If Josquin did compose this, he did so in very advanced years. he died in 1521. great economy of expressive is often a feature of the work of old composers. Stravinsky.
