It is sometimes forgotten that the essence of Bach's musical art is contained in the expressive harmonies and ingenious voce-leading of his chorale settings. In this set of well-known passiontide hymn texts, each separate verse is set to a different Bach harmonization aptly chosen to dramatize the poems and create a satisfying motet-like musical result.
